March 15 – April 21, 2007
Opening Reception: March 15, 2007, 7:00am
Invisible NYC is proud to host, Miscellaneous Debris, a solo-exhibit by mixed-media artist Damion Silver. Based in Boston, Mr. Silver works as an artist, designer and art curator. The work that Mr. Silver has brought to NYC is a collection of vibrant and gritty works influenced by street and skate culture.
As a fine artist, Mr. Silver’s work has been presented in galleries in
the US, Europe, Australia and Japan. As a designer, Mr. Silver has created graphics for Converse, Kool, Compatriot Snowboards, Timex, Scratch World Wide and Ito Yokado in Japan. His innovative designs have earned him several prestigious acknowledgements and a place in the new book, Tres Logos. Mr. Silver’s street murals and live painting demonstrations have brought him to the cultural forefront as one of the innovative talents of the Nu Art movement.
Mr. Silver creates multi-layered, interlacing compositions by combining his own drawings, collage, and appliqué. Employing provocative found images from magazines, bold comic strips, and graphic labels, he creates a rhythm of repeating form and line within each work and between the full set of works on display. In counterpoint, his whimsical hand-drawn and darkly repetitive characters duel for co-existence across the surfaces of these multi-dimensional canvases. The works are Mr. Silver’s interpretation of the frenetic nature of advertisements and images of mass media that are now given a lyrical and raw appeal relevant to the contemporary current of urban culture. The installation as a whole operates as an integrated work of art, reusing and reinventing many of the same images – either through the use of the repeating martian-like, hand drawn creatures or the found images that are cropped and flipped into new perspectives and placed into new compositions. There is an intense movement between the layers of images - almost as if these static works are moving, blinking signs. Mr. Silver’s use of collage technique is unparalleled. The pieces on display will include paintings - both traditional and custom cut, illustrations, etched glass, and screened wood. The works, sometimes using recognizable found images, are unique and fresh echoing the current graphic and electric aesthetic of urban skate culture.
The exhibit will run from March 15th – April 21st, Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 8:00 PM. The opening reception will be on Thursday March 15th, from 7:00-9:00 PM.
